IUPAC Nomenclature Rules for Amides

By German Fernandez, 5 March, 2024

Rule 1. Amides are named as derivatives of carboxylic acids by substituting the -oic ending of the acid with -amide.

Rule 2. Amides take priority over amines, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and nitriles.

Rule 3. Amides act as substituents when there are priority groups in the molecule; in this case, they precede the name of the principal chain and are named as carbamoyl.......

Rule 4. When the amide group is attached to a cycle, the cycle is named as the main chain and the term -carboxamide is used to name the amide group.
