IUPAC Nomenclature Rules for Ketones

By German Fernandez, 4 March, 2024

Rule 1. Ketones are named by replacing the -o ending of the alkane with the same chain length with -one. The principal chain chosen is the longest one containing the carbonyl group, and it is numbered so that this group receives the lowest locator.

Rule 1. There is a second type of nomenclature for ketones, which involves naming the chains as substituents, arranging them alphabetically, and ending the name with the word ketone.

Rule 7. When the ketone is not the functional group of the molecule, it is named oxo-.
