Bicyclic Nomenclature

By German Fernandez, 5 March, 2024

Rule 1. The name of a bicyclo compound is constructed with the word Bicyclo followed by brackets indicating the number of carbons in each of the three chains starting from the bridgehead carbons, ending with the name of the alkane with the same number of carbons.

Rule 2. The numbering starts from a bridgehead carbon and continues along the longest chain to the second bridgehead, then the medium chain is numbered, and finally the bridge (the smallest chain).

Rule 3. Substituents are arranged alphabetically, preceded by locators indicating their position on the bicyclo, and are placed in front of the word bicyclo.
